- Composed in 1930 and premiered in 1931 in Edinburghs Usher Hall, "The Prison" by Dame Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) is a Symphony in two parts, 'Close on Freedom' and 'The Deliverance', set for 2 soloists, chorus & full orchestra. The text is taken from a philosophical work by Henry Bennet Brewster concerning the writings of a prisoner in solitary confinement, his reflections on life & his preparations for death. Sarah Brailey (soprano) & Dashon Burton (bass-baritone) with the Experiential Chorus & Orchestra conducted by James Blachly. Chandos, 2020. Shortlisted for Gramophone Awards 2021 Choral category.
