R. O Morris and Howard Ferguson's textbook for Oxford University Press has been a staple of higher-level music education since it was first published in 1931. It includes 124 short excerpts for score reading practice, using a mixture of treble, alto, tenor & bass clefs, and various common transpositions. The book concentrates on diatonic harmonic study (including diminished sevenths) and harmonic counterpoint in up to three parts. The exercises train students to take in many staves at once, to see where the principal melody is, to understand harmonies and modulations, to read various clefs, and transpose as necessary.
